Museo Quinta Simoni, Camagüey

Visit the Museo Quinta Simoni, an architectural marvel that bears witness to a love story in Camagüey, Cuba

The Museo Quinta Simoni (Quinta Simoni Museum) is an old mansion built in 1848 in Camagüey, Cuba, near the Villa de Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe, making it the only suburban mansion in this city.

Its architect was Dr Jose Ramon Simoni Ricardo. Its inauguration as a museum took place in 2001. Declared a National Monument for its historical and architectural values, it is an obligatory stop for all the tourists who are passing through the province.

This neoclassical-style mansion was home to the family of Amalia Simoni, who was the greatest love of Major Ignacio Agramonte. You can still appreciate in perfect conditions the social class she belonged to and all the style of that time: two courtyards, two floors and even a marble fountain and a gazebo where the two lovers walked around. These stand out among all the characteristic ornamentation of that time, with great simplicity in all its forms. After the family's exile, the authorities tried to get rid of this magnificent house, which was initially divided and subsequently almost demolished and devastated.

But it was in the 80s when the Gobierno (government) and the Partido, together with the Dirección Provincial de Cultura (Provincial Direction of Culture) and the deep affection of the society of Camagüey, proposed the need to recuperate this house and rebuild it as it was before, with the most accurate materials possible to the originals. They considered that this space with historical and architectural values deserved to be rebuilt and thus give it a new opportunity for new social functions. After several years of work, the Centro Histórico Cultural (Historical and Cultural Centre) was opened on 1 December 1991, with the aim of focusing on women's work in all its aspects and promoting activities mainly for women.

It was transformed into a museum a decade later, thanks to an arduous task of collecting, donations and purchases from individuals, among others. It also serves as Casa de la Mujer Camagüeyana (House of the Woman of Camagüey) and the  sede de la Cátedra de la Mujer y la Familia de la Universidad de Camagüey (Seat of the Chair of Women and the Family of the University of Camagüey), which is why it is considered a true institution for society.
