The Plaza del Carmen in Camagüey, a classic colonial plaza with an irregular layout, is one of the essential sites in this province of Cuba. It is reached by crossing a pedestrian street full of colourful facades in pastel shades.
If there is something that we must emphasize this centric place is its wonderful appearance. Its street lights, large water jars, and the spectacular work of ceramist Martha Jimenez, striking life-size sculptures that reflect everyday scenes of work and life in Camagüey.
At the end of this plaza are two unique monuments. On the one hand, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen), of baroque style, built-in 1825 but recently restored, is the only church in the entire eastern half of Cuba that has two towers.
On the other hand, the great Monasterio de las Ursulinas (Ursuline Monastery), built-in 1829, is now an impressive architectural work, distinguished by the majestic arches that surround the courtyard. In the beginning, the convent was used as a shelter for hurricane victims and a school for the underprivileged. But today, the convent is a work of art, where strong mustard columns, jars and semicircular stained glass windows over wooden doors stand out.
