Alegría del Pío is a rural environment located just 17 minutes from the municipality of Niquero and surrounded by a thick and green vegetation where you will be able to enter the heart of the most remote part of Cuba. There are many unforeseen secrets awaiting for you in a place that at first might seem small and simple, but which in reality is the idyllic spot to spend a day with family or friends.
Man and nature coexist in this territory, since although only 198 people live in the village where the guajira culture still remains, you will find all sorts of attractions if you fancy getting to know a little bit more of Cuba’s native nature.
You can explore the area with a guide who will explain the flora and fauna or, if you dare, you can explore the trails and caves on your own. Be sure to visit the Cañaveral de Alegría del Pío, a historic sugar cane plantation; the so-called cueva del Che (Che cave), Monte del Castillo or the sendero cueva del Fueste (Fueste cave trail).
Apart from that, this place can also boast a history of its own. It was in this region where Fidel Castro’s men were arrested by Batista in 1956 and obliged to split up and flee. In 2009 a monument was opened to commemorate this event.
The big day of Alegría del Pío is on the 17th of May, the day on which the Cuban countrymen are honoured in the country.
