Iglesia Mayor de San Salvador, Bayamo

Pop by the Iglesia Parroquial Mayor de San Salvador in Bayamo, one of the most intriguing tourist attractions in Cuba

The architectonic complex of the Iglesia Parroquial Mayo de San Salvador (Mayor de San Salvador Parochial Church), right in the centre of Bayamo, Cuba, comprises a main body having a nave in it, a three-bodied bell tower and a dom; and another secondary body, formed by the Capilla de la Dolorosa and a parish house.

The history uniting both bodies is worth mentioning. In 1514 a chapel was built with materials of low consistency, that after 80 years were replaced with wood. In 1613 the building achieved the major parish church category.

As a consequence of the fire of 1869 devastating the city, the Church burned to the ground and only the Capilla de la Dolorosa dating from 1740 remained.

In 1916 the restoration processes began and the temple gained a cathedral condition, which was a distinctive and sole decision of Pope John Paul II. In 2005 the last one of  five restoration processes was finished.

You are able to see the most important event that happened in this sacred place on the central arch: the consecration of the flag raised by the Cuban insurgents during the Guerra de los Diez Años (Ten Years’ War), an event reflected on the work of Julio Desangles. This work of art makes up the only patriotic-themed painting in a Catholic church in Cuba. The mural called La Bayamesa was built in 1868.

You will find this Catholic temple irresistible, located in the same area where the National Anthem of La Bayamesa was heard for the first time. That is why the square leading to the church is called Plaza del Himno Nacional (National Anthem Square).
