The municipality of Guisa, in the province of Granma, is one of the most amazing and pleasant villages in all of Cuba. Part of this beauty is thanks to its location on the slopes of Sierra Maestra, whose elevations provide the municipality with picturesque landscapes.

Due to Guisa’s wonderful location in a mountainous area, the region has a prolific and diverse fauna. Endemic animals include land molluscs, amphibians, reptiles and birds. The same is true of the zone’s thick vegetation, which is extremely varied due to the altitude and ecological differences. The royal palm, Cuba’s national tree, is highlightable.

Although Guisa was established in the mid-18th century, its historical significance lies in the role played by the municipality during the Independence Wars and the Cuban Revolution. This regions was the stage for many armed confrontations, most notably the last great battle of the War of 1895, an attack led by General Calixto García Iñíguez; and the movement of the independence leader Fidel Castro, when he extended his troops to the rest of the country afterwards achieving victory in 1959.

Guisa has a significant cultural heritage as well worthy of being known and linked to the history of the region. Among the most important constructions is the Braulio Coroneaux Monument, a formidable optical tower the Spanish authorities placed in 1784 to make communication between the town and other areas easier. The indigenous Loma de Piedra Monument was also the result of the astuteness of the Spanish, who built it in a strategic location so that the soldiers could easily control the entrance and the exit to the town.

Guisa also has the Casa del General del Ejército Libertador (House of the General of the Liberator Army), located in the historical centre and built in the second half of the 20th century. Another substantial spot in the history of the region is Fidel’s Command Post, located in a rural zone between the roading going from Guisa to Santa Bárbara. This place was chosen by the pro-independence leader to form the command post during the Battle of Guisa in 1958. It was a strategic location, as it was very well protected by the village mountains.
