The Retablo de los Héroes (Altarpiece of the Heroes) stands out for being the place where the remains of Francisco Vicente Aguilera rest. Although he was born in Cuba, he died in New York in 1877 and his body came back to the city that saw him grow up, Bayamo. He was buried there with all the possible admiration from his closest ones and neighbours. Before than a lovely garden this place was a cemetery that stood out for being the first one of its type.
In the beginning of the 19th century it was suggested to move it away from the centre of Bayamo and turn the area into a peaceful park. As the years went by, in 1958, it was decided to renovate the funerary complex adding as well a sculpture in honour of Francisco Vicente Aguilera, like the faces of his compatriots as an act of respect and appreciation.
