The Museo Celia Sánchez (Celia Sánchez Museum) located on the main street of Media Luna in Cuba is a spot dedicated to the memory of Celia Sánchez. This significant figure, born in 1920 in Media Luna, went down in history for being the first Cuban woman to fight in the Rebel army.
Celia wanted to be more than a soldier. In 1957 she created the women’s platoon known as the Marianas and five years later she was appointed Secretary of the Cuban Council of Ministers. She eventually rose to the post of Minister of the Presidency.
The building in which, since 1990, the house-museum dedicated to her dates from 1908. The history of the Sánchez-Manduley family is linked to the building when in 1913 the parents bought the building to form the family home, a place where Celia and her nine siblings were born and raised. Celia lived in the house on Calle Raúl Podio until her family moved to Pilón, when she was 20 years old. It is in this that she forged the ideals and principles that made her stand up against the current regime in which she grew up.
Among many of the acts where the bravery and courage of her person can be appreciated, we could mention: her climb to the Pico Real Turquino to install a bust of José Martí, founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and leader of the War of Independence; her move in 1953 to the place where the barracks of Carlos Manuel Céspedes were located to be able to support and follow this movement as closely as possible; or her help in the Granma landings.
Three years after her death, in 1983, the house was opened to the public as a Municipal Museum and after another seven years it obtained the category of Memorial Museum, almost parallel to that of National Monument thanks to its heritage, historical and cultural value.
Numerous restoration processes have been carried out, but the architecture of the house is still as it was in 1908. Inside you can see a garden of eight rooms with the most personal objects of her life of sixty year, as well as those of her family in general, in which her father Manuel Sánchez Silveira stands out.
