Media Luna is a small town, a part of the province of Granma, located between the sugar fields stretching from Manzanillo to Cabo Cruz. It is considered one of Cuba’s sugar cities par excellence.
The party piece of this lovely place is its connection with the “first lady” of the Cuban Revolution, Celia Sánchez, a woman who fought in the Rebel Army and contributed to the creation of the Mariana Grajales women’s platoon. This is the place that saw the birth of this significant historical figure in 1920, whose original house is an exhibition centre nowadays, known as the Celia Sánchez Museum.
If you really fancy experiencing the purest essence of Cuba, it is worth strolling through its picturesque streets decorated with gingerbread figures. Strolling through the nooks and crannies of this wonderful place is one of the most awesome things you can do here in your spare time. Although not dominated by historical monuments, the green views you will discover prove that it is worth making space for this in your busy schedule.
Media Luna has an exquisite arbour that is almost as striking as the one in Manzanillo, white in colour and with a refined dome. Stroll through the main park whilst enjoying street theatre with an ice cream or milkshake.
Just 28 km from Media Luna we find Cinco Palmas, a locality of special historical interest due to the monument marking the spot where Fidel Castro’s rebel army regrouped after being dispersed during the Granma landing in December 1956.
