The foundation of the Plaza de la Patria (Square of the Homeland) took place on the 26th of July 1982 in Bayamo in presence of commander Castro. Since then the place is used by the Bayamese as a meeting point and place where many social and cultural events organised in Cuba take place.
At the square you will find a monument reflecting a summarised history from the beginnigs of the municipality till its creation, popping by each and every one of the events that turned Bayamo into the genuine cuna de la Revolución (cradle of the Revolution).
Two native figures are represented there referring to the origin of the city; a big flame on the top of the monument commemorating the fire of 1869; the enormous mountains of Sierra Maestra where the vast majority of historical combats for national independence took place; and figures and faces of local heroes, such as Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and Antonio Maceo; and nationals, like Che Guevara and Fidel Castro.
