Niquero is a small coastal town in Cuba, located in a corner in the south-western part of the province of Granma. It comprises a municipality with a rich history and whose location in the south of the island gives it grand authenticity.

This coastal municipality, bathed by the waters of Caribbean sea, makes up one of the key centres of sugar production in Cuba. Its sugar industry is considered one of the biggest producers of sugar in the whole island.
It consists of a city dominated by one of the few sugar refineries still active in the area after closures in 2002: La Refinería de Roberto Ramírez Delgado (The Refinery of Roberto Ramírez Delgado) built in 1905. Fishing also plays an important role in the economic development of the region and the sea is a fundamental part of the life of its people, the ones that are known as “people of the sea and the saltpeter”.
The first inhabitants of this region were the native aborigines who, since 1494, started to communicate with the Spanish giving place to a transculturation process. This process ended up absorbing the native culture in favour of the Spanish. However, there is evidence of indigenous agro-potter communities in the South of Alegría del Pío and Cabo Cruz with elements found, such as pictographs, particular deities and ceremonial caves. Also, the existence of fishing communities settled in what nowadays corresponds to the neighbourhood of Cachón.
If the rich history of the city of Niquero does not attract your attention, it is worth a visit just because it is the home of Parque Nacional Desembarco del Granma (Desembarco del Granma National Park), adjacent to the municipality of Pilón and without a doubt, the greatest attraction, not only of Niquero, but of entire Granma. In this locality we find Cabo Cruz as well, the southernmost part of Cuba.
Among the activities you can do during your visit to Niquero, it is worth having a nice walk through its quiet streets admiring the unique wooden slatted houses; stroll through the pleasant park where we find a cinema; as well as visit the small but lovely city museum.
Do not miss either the monument commemorating the victims of the Granma landings, who were killed by Batista’s forces in 1956. If you are lucky, you might get the chance to hear a local playing the oriental organ, the traditional instrument of this kind land.
The municipality of Niquero treasures spots of significant cultural interest, among them the National Monument in honour of Granma landings and the route taken by them; the cemetery where the victims murdered by the tyrant Fulgencio Batista were buried; or the place that served as the stage for the battle of Alegría de Pío.
If you decide to travel to Niquero, it is fundamental to swing by Las Coloradas Beach, a symbolic place in the entire Cuba for its historical and cultural interest. Other important attractions are the locality of Alegría del Pío, a lovely natural spot with a strong historical value; and Cabo Cruz, the true ecological jewel of Granma, which has ceremonial caves and relics of aboriginal life.
