The municipality of Yara, named after a river going through the area, is a region in Cuba in the province of Granma between Manzanillo and Bayamo. Surrounded by enormous sugar cane plantations, hardly mentioned in travel guides, although it is an area with a lot to offer.
In this region we hear the native spirit beating that was originally found by the first Spanish colonisers, who christened it as one of their “Indian villages”. The statue of the rebellious chief called Hatuey, located at the Plaza Mayor of Yara city, bearing witness to the hypothesis of the Spanish burning the leader for his resistance in this place and not in Baracoa.
Another historical event Yara starred in took place on the 11th of October 1868, as it was the first locality that the army of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes took from the Spanish. At that moment the pro-independence leader pronounced the famous grito de Yara, proclaiming for the first time the independence of Cuba.
