The Bioparque Rocazul (Rocazul Biopark), located at the bahía de Naranjo (Naranjo Bay) inside Holguín province, is a great place for ecotourism lovers and for the ones who fancy exploring the Cuban nature.
It covers a total area of 496 hectareas, a great part of them forests full of animal and plant species. The relief is formed by limestone rocks and serpentinites showing blue tones to the scenery. That is where the name comes from.
In 2005 this park was opened after an initiative designing routes all over the area without harming the scenery so that the visitors can have fun in this splendid place paying attention to the environment.
There are three main areas. The Sendero Rocazul (Rocazul Route) is the biggest of them, as it is 4,200 metres long. It exhibits a large amount of serpentinite rocks over 70 million years old and cuabal vegetation, among which we highlight the smallest cactus in the world. The route goes through numerous ecosystems, including the coastal zone, where we may admire parts of the fauna and flora of the place and some of the native Cuban archaeological samples.
The Sendero Loma El Tempo (Loma El Tempo Route) goes through 2,800 metres and passes by the highest point of the area, the Loma del Templo of 93.2 metres. The natural richness in this spot is enormous, as it has beautiful and medicinal trees apart from the large variety of animals in the area.
Lastly, the Finca Monte Bello is a more relaxed spot where you may find a sample of the culture and tradition of the country in Cuba. Here is the home of compay Kike, gardens with coffee and medicinal plant varieties and some pets as well as exotic animals
