The Museo de Artes Decorativas (Decorative Art Museum) of Gibara is a unique gallery of great value in Cuba amassing items from the 19th and the 20th century from France, England and Germany. Among them we highlight the pottery, the glass, sculptures and styled furniture.
The museum was opened in 1972 in one of the most emblematic neoclassical buildings in town, the Independencia building, that it shares with the Museo de Historia Municipal de Gibara (Municipal History Museum of Gibara).
It consists of 14 exhibition halls and more than 2,200 items, which means a very wide and rich collection. The Salón Principal (Main Hall) is the most outstanding one where you will find furniture of medallion style, a grand piano, the armchair of the people in love and beautiful pottery in an atmosphere that the arches of multi-coloured glass panels embellish, the bronze sculptures and walls decorated with floral motives in tones of pink in the hall. In other halls you may admire items from different eras such as a rococo cupboard from the 19th century and original documents, like Quixote editions as well as many other works of universal literature coming from the 19th century
