The Caverna de Panaderos located in the city centre of Gibara, a city belonging to the Cuban province of Holguín, is one of the main archaeological finds in the area. This cave of 19 galleries was discovered in the 19th century and it was examined completely. In the second half of the 20th century its age of around 90 millions years was calculated, that is, the Mesozoic era.
In spite of documents calling the cave Cueva del Silencio (Cave of Silence), the name of “Los Panaderos” (“The Bakers”) was given to it by the explorer group led by Luis Pérez that started to visit it and mark every explored corner with this name.
The place is astonishing as well as imposing, the cave formations have particular figures that make them look like the famous Casper ghost as well as a mammoth. Apart from the stalactites and stalagmites, the galleries go down 32 metres till the sea level where the underground rivers end. In this ecosystem you can find local species, like bats, pseudoscorpions, crickets and maritime fauna.
A great option for hiking lovers is an eco-cave-archaeological Caverna de los Panaderos route in the area of Polja del Cementerio finishing in these caverns. A unique opportunity to enjoy the flora and fauna of the area whilst having a nice walk.
