The Catedral de Holguín (Holguín Cathedral) or Catedral de San Isidoro (San Isidoro Cathedral) was built in 1720 with the motive of the foundation of this Cuban city. Although at first, it was destined to work as a church, in 1979 it obtained the Cathedral category.
The original wooden church was demolished in 1730 and replaced with another one made of mud bricks with a tile roof, carved wood and brick floors. In 1751 it was extended with two aisles, the capilla de la Virgen del Rosario (Virgen del Rosario Chapel) and the capilla de Jesús Nazareno (Jesús Nazareno Chapel) (today known as the Virgen de la Caridad) and a new sacristy. Unfortunately, in the 19th century it underwent a remodeling process during which the central tower was destroyed and two new towers were installed on both sides of the central nave in its place.
Nowadays the Catedral de San Isidoro (San Isidoro Cathedral) is a big building with a three door facade and a triangular finish franked by two tall towers crowned with two domes. It consists of a construction with a floor shape of a Latin T which is significant thanks to the carved ceiling preserved from the original temple, one of the prettiest ones of Mudejar style preserved in the city.
The easiest way to access the cathedral is to visit the Peralta Park, known as the Parque de la Iglesia de San Isidoro (Park of San Isidoro Church) in the olden days, where you have an astonishing point to admire the yellow colours of the facade and its details in red which turn this place into a very charming place.
