The Galería de Arte Holguín (Holguín Art Gallery) is a spacious hall where different exhibitions of this Cuban province, some of them highly prestigious, take place. Although the building was built in 1936 it was used widely as a food shop or a chess hall, in 1993 the Poder Popular gave the hall to Colectivo Plástico Municipal (Municipal Plastic Arts Group) and subsequently it turned into an art gallery.
The main objective of this institution is to show to the public the many plastic art expressions of local artists as well as organising other cultural activities, such as competitions.
One of the most significant events is the “El Angelote”, in honour of the monument at Parque Céspedes (Céspedes Park) in commemoration of the fallen in the independence wars. It is being celebrated as a tribute to the responsibles who built the three main statues of the most important parks in the city, that is, Julio Grave de Peralta and Calixto García Iñiguez.
The Holguín Gallery is always a warm space where you are able to have a nice small walk and dive in the art and the Cuban culture simultaneously.
