The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad (Nuestra Señora de la Caridad Church) in the town of Banes, the province of Holguín, is a stage for one of the most absurd events in the history of Cuba. The Cuban leader Fulgencio Batista was born in that region in 1901 and years later Fidel Castro married Mirta Díaz Balart at the same church. It was no ordinary wedding, as Batista gave the newlyweds a present he probably ended up regretting afterwards.
The Church is built with Art Deco styled wooden strips, it is a simple Catholic temple and not too affluent. It is located at the Parque Martí (Martí Park), which is a privileged spot in the city centre. Nevertheless, the event that made the church popular is the notorious wedding of the leader who led the country for more than half a century.
