The Museo Indocubano Baní (Baní Indocuban Museum) in Banes, is a one of a kind museum in Cuba as it houses the best collection of indigenous archaeology. Although this particular museum is quite small, the value of the pieces of the exhibition is almost incalculable and because of that a visit to this centre is indispensable.
The museum is located in a modern building built in 1953, which was the headquarters of the Banco Continental Cubano (Cuban Continental Bank) at first. In 1965, the museum was founded thanks to individuals’ donations and archaeological excavations, the majority from the province de Holguín, as more than 33% of the country’s archaeological material is there, the majority in the environs of Banes.
The exhibition focuses on the native culture in Cuba and it consists of a large variety of work, ritual and domestic tools. The collection is divided in four halls: introductory, necklaces, pottery and mezzanine, although the museum jewels are the two golden idols of which one has turned into the city symbol.
