The Museo de Historia Natural (Natural History Museum) of Gibara, founded on December 30, 1966, is an extraordinary place to learn more about the evolution of the species living in this region of Cuba. It is placed in a gorgeous neoclassical building that was the Casino Español (Spanish Casino) in the olden days.
It is a very valuable centre thanks to the enormous geology and biology collection it has. The exhibition consists of 7 main collections: birds, mammals, reptiles, botany, molluscs, geology and seabed. Through these you get to meet the different species and their characteristics that live in the area, among which we highlight the fauna of the maritime ecosystem.
One of the most striking halls in the museum is the one exhibiting the grand egg collection of different migratory species living in the area and the one that has the entire skeleton of a sperm whale or a pilot whale
Also, in Gibara it is typical to make home wine, the actual museum has a club of wine producers that wants to carry on with the tradition.
