The Loma de la Cruz (Cross Hillock) is the ideal place for eye-catching views of the entire city of Holguín in Cuba. This 261-metre elevation got its name from the cross you can find on the top of it. A Franciscan friar called Francisco Antonio de Alegría placed it there in 1790.
Since the cross was placed there, besides changing the name that previously was known as cerro Bayado (Bayado Hill), the place was turned into a pilgrimage spot, a celebration where the Romerías de Mayo (May Processions) was inaugurated. More to the point, a place for admiration of amazing sceneries.
To get to the top, from the city you will find the stairway of 458 steps that will take you all the way to the cross taking care of Holguín. Although there are benches for rest along the way, it is possible to get there by car on the back side of the hillside.
This place is exceptional not only because of its lovely environment, but the incidents it has experienced. Already during the independence wars it was very important, as it was used by the Spanish as a vigilance spot on the Torre de Numancia (Numancia Tower) that they built there. Besides, on the side of the hillock many executions of Holguín patriots and internationalists took place.
Some of the happier events that took place there are the Romerías festival, an old tradition that is important for the locals. In 2015, Pope Francis blessed the city of Holguín for the Loma de la Cruz (Cross Hillock).
