The Parque Carlos Manuel de Céspedes (Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Park), known as Parque San José (San José Park) as well, is another of many lovely plazas you can find in the city of Holguín in Cuba. This one was the third to be built with the objective of creating an access spot to the religious temple that the Franciscan wanted to build in the town.
In the 18th century the Franciscan built here a chapel that gave name to Plaza de San Francisco in honour of these monks. However, in the same place the Iglesia de San José (San José Church) was opened in 1809 naming the plaza as well: Plaza de San José (San José Plaza). This spot was very important for a long time, as it was the place where the city market was. In the 20th century like the plaza as the San José Church had to be rebuilt because of the damage caused during the independence wars.
In 1898, the name of the plaza was replaced with the name of Céspedes Park, in honour of Carlos Manuel Céspedes as the Cuban know him: Padre de la Patria (Father of the Homeland) of whom a marble statue is placed in the same plaza. Another of the plaza’s monuments is the “El Angelote” sculpture, a figure made from marble and bronze representing the triumph that goes further away than death.
Views from the Céspedes Park with the gorgeous San José Church at the back and the monuments and the gardens that decorate it is undoubtedly one of the most astonishing scenes in the city and an idyllic place for walks and rest.
