The Plaza Calixto García (Calixto García Square) in Gibara is the Main Square or Parade Square of this Cuban city that started out in life when the Iglesia de San Fulgencio (San Fulgencio Church) was built in the same place in 1853.
Like many parks that decorate the cities of Cuba, this emphasises the village’s exquisite church and the most significant and grand buildings located around it. The majority of them are of neoclassical and eclectic style composing a gorgeous atmosphere which encloses this square and is in charge of relevant city functions at the same time. Some of them are the Museo de Historia Natural (Natural History Museum), Sede del Gobierno Municipal (Municipal Government Headquarters) or Biblioteca Municipal (Municipal Library).
Also, the place has many splendid tree and shrub gardens accompanying the monuments, like the Estatua de la Libertad (Statue of Liberty) unveiled in 1915 polemically due to its slogan “Gibara has a statue, because it deserves it” that was replaced afterwards due to complaints with “Gibara, for the liberators of the Homeland”. Also, you may find two small statues more, a couple of busts on pillars of José Martí and Antonio Maceo summarising the beautiful image of the square.
