The Museo Eduardo García Feria y José García Castañeda (Eduardo García Feria y José García Castañeda Museum) is a small gallery located in Holguín exhibiting the life and labour of these father and son archaeologists and naturalists. The first of them makes him the forerunner of the city’s first museum and he is considered as a main figure in the distribution of the Cuban culture.
In the 20th century it was normal to collect items of some value and some of these collectors ended up joining their collections and showed them to the public. Among these people we have Eduardo García Feria who ended up putting together an extremely important collection owing to the donation of unknown people and their own excavations. Their sons, José Agustín and Rolando García Castañeda cooperated with him in the enrichment of the funds.
Eduardo’s collection, apart from its size and value, differed from the others in the area, as this one points out any type of detail that had to do with every piece making it the forerunner of the Cuban museology. Proud of his collection, the family father decided to leave the items permanently in the living rooms of his house, opening it to the public and so everyone who would want to can see it.
Soon the humble museum gained popularity and people outside the city went and visited it. Eduardo García Feria worked as a guide in the living room of his house and showed the visitants the characteristics of his exhibition. Without doubt he was an individual who selflessly carried out crucial social work that every Holguín man or woman has greatly appreciated.
