The Iglesia de San Fulgencio (San Fulgencio Church) in Gibara is a big temple in the city centre, at the Plaza Calixto García (Calixto García Square), a significant building for the Catholicism in the Cuban province of Holguín.
Dating back to its birth in 1820 when an early construction of wood and tiles was built on this square. Due to the materials used the building suffered heavy deterioration and in 1850, Victoriana de Ávila from Holguín hired the architect Juan Bautista Pons to build a new church.
Construction work of the new temple took three years. This large temple is large and it is divided in three naves, the central where the choir is, of 8.36 metres wide and the two nave-aisles of 5.02 metres. They are of torcazo style, the exterior of the church rises with two big towers crowned by roof tile-coloured elegant domes, one of them equipped with a bell tower and the other one with a clock. On the other side of the church an important grand vault emphasises the totality. The interior is particular due to the variety of pictures it houses as well as other valuable items that Victoriana de Ávila mainly got for her temple.
Surprising news that a village so modest and small like Gibara has a church of similar size, splendour and richness, something that is thanks to Holguín men and women as well as other people that through their donations helped the construction of this stateliness.
