The Playa Los Caletones (Los Caletones Beach) is a spot inside the Reserva Ecológica de Caletones (Caletones Ecological Reserve) belonging to the municipality of Gibara, Cuba. It is a marvellous beach of white fine sand enjoying great popularity thanks to the existence of natural pools near the beach.
It is located in the West of Gibara, almost in the border with the neighbouring province of Las Tunas and it is 175 metres long and 8 to 10 metres wide. Its bottom is half sandy, half rocky and half of the seibadal prairie in areas of low waves. However, the most outstanding thing on the beach are the natural tanks formed by movements of the caverns where the subterranean rivers flow. Nowadays these tanks consist of large salt water pools that tourists love. Among them the Poza Fría (Cold Natural Pool), the Poza de los Patos (Ducks’ Natural Pool) and the Poza Negra (Black Natural Pool) are the most popular ones.
Another place worth visiting in the outskirts is the Caverna Tanque Azul (Blue Tank Cavern), a place wanting to turn itself into a Monumento Nacional (National Monument). It is located 4 km away from the beach and it is composed of a big natural pool of transparent water allowing access to the biggest inundated cave discovered in the country. Inside that cave we find speleothems, stalactites, stalagmites, columns and beautiful stratums of different shapes.
