The Museo de Historia Provincial La Periquera (La Periquera Provincial History Museum) in Holguín is not just a gallery, it is a gallery that represents a city symbol as a stage for many significant events of the history of Cuba.
The construction of this beautiful building began in 1860 by order of the richest man in Holguín, a Spaniard called Francisco Rondán. Its magnificent facade of neoclassical style stands out at Parque Calixto García (Calixto García Park) and the wide as well as luxurious halls in it have made this place the perfect meeting and festivity point for a long time.
The name of La Periquera comes from one of the many historic events that took place in the province. One of the most reliable theories says that because during the independence war the rebels besieged the Spanish Army protecting the building and referring to the coloured uniform of Spanish soldiers in green and red tones, the Ejército Libertador (Liberation Army) started to call them “pericos” (parakeets). This name became popular and to date it keeps the same name. It is a building that, in spite of this first attack and the next one led by Calixto García and Máximo Gómez, still has the same splendour of yesteryear.
One of La Periqueta’s details is its door knocker made of wrought iron representing the face of a woman of the same neoclassical style as the building that has turned into the symbol of Holguín municipality. It symbolises friendship and is given to Cuban and foreign individuals that collaborated in the city development at some point.
In 1978, this building that was used as the Casa de Gobierno (Government Palace) for more than a decade was declared Monumento Nacional (National Monument) as well as Museo Provincial de Holguín (Holguín Provincial Museum). In it you can learn more about the history of the area since the pre-Columbian times till this very moment and admire the items of great value, such as natuve archaeological samples, documents and independence war testimonies. Also, art exhibitions of internationally acclaimed artists are available as well and in the interior patio you can enjoy musical, historical and literary performances.
