The Parque Monumento Nacional Bariay in the North of Holguín, is a significant place for Cuba, not only because of its natural value, but being the spot where Christopher Columbus arrived with his vessels in 1492.

The park has amazing natural characteristics, it is equipped with many plant shapes of different types where a very rich fauna lives. In this spot you will find three parks, 16 beaches, six bays, three rivers, seven cays, 160 caves… that you can browse through more than 100 routes. Also, to these landforms we can add the numerous forests beautifying the area, like the proximity to the Sitio Chorro de Maíta and the extremely important archaeological finds in the region, not to mention the awesome underwater platform full of coral barriers. Also, you may admire the La Silla de Gibara from this place, a mountain Columbus named after a saddle that looked like the mountain. The Mezquita Colón (Colón Mosque).
Actually, this fantastic natural spot, apart from its splendid scenery, is known for being the place where the Spanish, by order of Columbus, saw the roofs of a settlement and docked their vessels. At a point of the Bariay Bay where this took place is nowadays a buoy showing the place. Like the excavations of Chorro de Maíta show, in this spot there was a big settlement formed by native Cuban that died out in the end.
At the park we may discover a monument commemorating this historic event: Monumento conmemorativo del Medio Milenio del Encuentro entre las Dos Culturas (Commemorative Monument of the Half a Millennium of the Encounter between Two Cultures), made by Caridad Ramos. In this work of art we find the remains of a European neoclassical construction and replicas of objects of the natives that were found in the nearby excavations. These elements, in the natural context of the park with its thick vegetation, could not represent better the contrast of these two cultures that took place when Columbus arrived.
