The Plaza de la Revolución of Holguín is a monument reminiscing all those who fought for the freedom of Cuba, a special place of political and historical interest in a city that was always involved in wars of the country.
The square was opened in 1979 and declared as a Monumento Nacional (National Monument) in 1991, remarkable for storing numerous monuments, all of them dedicated to war heroes. Visually the most important is the one that is located in the centre, a monument made of frieze representing the village’s fight over history.
However, this park is mainly known for preserving the remains of Major General Calixto García and his mother Lucía Íñiguez, a great patriot, in a special mausoleum. Among them 17 palm trees honour other Holguín generals who died in the independence wars.
At the Bosque de los Héroes (Heroes’ Forest) occupying around 50,000 m2, inside it as well, you can find two more monuments: the Pascuas Sangrientas, in commemoration of a tragic incident during Batista’s dictatorship in 1956, and another in honour of a sugar workers’ leader Jesús Menéndez.
This spot has turned into a political centre of Holguín city where different mass marches take place, like the one on Workers’ Day. Also, it is a place where you can be entertained by the best concerts in the area.
