The Farallones de Seboruco is a Monumento Nacional (National Monument) located in the province of Holguín where the oldest archaeological remains in the whole of Cuba have been found. It is a globally-known place due to its significance in West Indian archaeology and particularly for Cuba, that you may find 7 km away from the city of Mayarí.
In 1939, the doctor Antonio Núñez Jiménez discovered this place and found remains around 6,000 years old, which means it is the oldest find in Cuba to date. The investigations reveal that in these places the native Upper Archaic groups organised necrological ceremonies where they buried the dead people with different objects after a ritual of some sort. These inhabitants did not know anything about agriculture or pottery. However, they knew something about wood carving.
The complex consists of numerous caves where we find cave paintings in a pristine condition.
Thanks to this find the investigation of old native culture has advanced greatly and it is still in progress, as the research of this area is under development.
