The Museo Casa Natal de Calixto García (Museum of the Birth House of Calixto García) in Holguín is a commemorative spot of this great local figure and of its role played during the independence wars of Cuba. It consists of a birth house of the general belonging to the García-Iñiguez family, a place that having served different purposes and suffered many remodellings opened its doors as a museum in 1974.
The house, a very simple one, is a building from the end of the 18th century of which the part that used to be the house is only preserved. In this biographical museum expositions of pictures, documents, weapons and personal objects belonging to this Holguín figure took place. Afterwards in 1986, the museum was extended and a new department of the Information Centre of Independence Wars was opened.
The museum was declared as Monumento Nacional (National Monument) in 1987 recognising the diffusion work of the history of Calixto García. History fanatics will love this place, because there they can take a closer look at the events that marked the independence of Cuba and especially one of its main craftsmen.
