The Catedral de Matanzas (Cathedral), or Catedral de San Carlos Borromeo, is the most important religious building in all this Cuban city. It is located near the Parque de la Libertad and the Palacio de Junco (Junco Palace). A strategic location away from the hustle and bustle of these two always very busy places.
With the laying of its first stone in 1693, the city of Matanzas was officially founded. In this act, the altar and the cross are raised for the first time to carry out the first official mass and San Carlos and San Severino are consecrated as patrons of the city.
Despite being started at the same time as the city, it was not until many years later that the church was finished. The temple that we see today is the result of several reconstructions that have taken place over the years. The result is the combination of eclectic, neoclassical and baroque styles that we find in the building.
Nevertheless, perhaps the most interesting thing about this church that was named cathedral in 1912, are the frescoes that are found inside, some of which are considered the most beautiful in all of Cuba.
