The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol (San Pedro the Apostle Church), in the barrio de Versalles (Versailles neighbourhood), is one of the neoclassical style buildings that adorn the city of Matanzas. The same architect of the Teatro Sauto (Theater), Daniel Dall Aglio, is responsible for this beautiful church which is considered the most important religious building in all of Cuba in the 19th century. Also, it is one of the seven wonders of the province according to the UNAICC (National Union of Architects and Construction Engineers of Cuba).
The church is made up of three naves, the central nave imitates the Vatican's with a barrel vault dome and grooves on the sides, and at the intersection, another small dome is placed. Two towers on each side of the nave provide the building with perfect symmetry, what they gain in height they also gain in adornment and beauty.
The interior is no less beautiful. The Italian architect wanted to highlight the high altar. It is a jewel by the sculptor Timoteo Garcia, and it provides plenty of light through the two light entrances on the sides of the central vault. Next to the altar is a wooden representation of the Stations of the Cross whose main image dates back to the 18th century and is considered one of the most spectacular on the island.
After years of abandonment, the restoration of the temple in 2009 has restored this church to its former splendour and it is now undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sights in the entire city.
