The Museo de Arte Provincial (Provincial Art Museum) in Matanzas, located in a 19th-century colonial building, collects pieces of art, not only from the province but also from all over Cuba and other parts of the world. As a result, it has become a very important gallery within the country. Moreover, it is a place where culture and art are preserved and promoted.
After having been the residence of members of the Matanzas bourgeoisie and diplomatic headquarters, in 1998 this eclectic style house opened its doors to the public as a museum. This is thanks in part to the work of the native painter Lorenzo Padilla, who donated a large number of works to the institution with the purpose of turning it into a museum.
The gallery has three permanent rooms and one temporary room where examples of the artistic evolution that has taken place in the history of the country are displayed. Among its pieces are some of great historical and artistic value such as expositions of African art, Dutch prints and pictorial art of the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection represents a magnificent opportunity for those who want to learn more about Cuban art and its history, one of the most representative of the Caribbean.
