La Laguna del Tesoro is one of the lakes in the nature reserve of the Península de Zapata in the south of Matanzas province, Cuba. It's particularly recommendable to visit, since in its surroundings there is the Hotel Guamá, a Taino Village, and the Crocodile Farm.
The name comes from a legend that tells that the Taino Indians who lived there, in the presence of the Spanish conquerors, decided to throw all their riches to the bottom of the lagoon to prevent them from taking them.
Although this story has not been proven, it is true that there is wealth in the waters of the lagoon, even though it is natural. In all the surroundings of the lagoon cohabit with a wide variety of plant and animal species that create an amazing landscape. Here you can find manatees, crocodiles, exotic birds and flora of great national significance.
To access the lagoon you must go to the Boca de guamá where you will take a boat that will lead you through its waters until you reach the Centro Turístico Guamá (Guamá Tourist Center). There you will find the Taino Village, a replica of an indigenous village with sculptures by the artist Rita Longa. There is also the Hotel Guamá, a charming hotel with a postcard-like view, and the Crocodile Farm where around 10,000 reptiles are protected.
Given the natural richness of the surroundings, it is a great place to do sport fishing and bird watching, as well as other species that live in the lagoon.
