The Cueva de Ambrosio (Cave of Ambrosio) is a place of incalculable archaeological value because it contains numerous examples of cave art. They are located on the south coast of the Cuban peninsula of Hicacos, inside the Reserva Ecológica de Varahicacos (Varahicacos Ecological Reserve) and near the city of Varadero.
This cave, formed by five galleries, was discovered by two doctors in 1961. It is estimated that they were formed 2 million years ago. They found one of the most important archaeological findings in the Caribbean, evidence of the presence of both indigenous people and slaves in the cave. It is even thought that the cave may have served as a refuge for pirates.
The cave art remains found to consist of almost 72 pre-Columbian drawings similar to those found in other caves on the island. Most of them are geometrical figures painted in black and red colours, which present an enigma for researchers. Some of the theories affirm their African origin and others think that the circular forms are a kind of calendar, but what is certain is that they are part of a mystery as well as a magical landscape.
