The Museo a la Batalla de Ideas (Museum of the Battle of Ideas) is a unique space, not only in Cuba but in the world. Located in the city of Cárdenas in Matanzas, in the Cuartel de Bomberos (old Fire Department), it was inaugurated in 2001 by Fidel Castro himself. This institution represents a tribute to the struggle of Cubans.
In 1999, an event occurred that would move all the people of Cuba: relatives kidnapped a boy from the town of Cardenas, Elian Gonzalez Brotons, and took him to Miami during the Cuba-United States tensions. A fight began between the Cuban-American mafia, which was trying to prevent the boy's return to Cuba, and his father, who was claiming him in the United States Interests Bureau. Many Cubans decided to support Elián's father and go out on the streets to demand his return. This unexpectedly turned into a massive social movement in the country and abroad and the beginning of the ideological confrontation with American imperialism. When Fidel Castro visited the city, the idea of creating an institution to record the testimonies of Cubans in this struggle arose, and immediately preparations began to restore the old fire station and establish the museum there.
This is a historical and social museum, reminiscent of one of the most popular movements in the history of Cuba in which the people are the protagonists.
The building has three floors, the first one has 6 exhibition rooms and the main one is dedicated to the fight to recover Elián González; the second one functions as a cultural complex hosting a conference room and a computer room; and in the third one there is a library, a transitory room with local and national art. There is also a public access viewpoint which is the highest point in the city from where you can get a great panoramic view of the surroundings.
The Museo a la Batalla de Ideas is a unique place where, apart from promoting local culture, it is entirely dedicated to the citizens and their merits, something that is difficult to find in other museums in the world.
