The Puente Calixto García (Calixto García Bridge), which crosses the San Juan River on its way through the city of Matanzas in Cuba, is without a doubt the most spectacular of the 21 bridges found in this town. With its 73 metres in length, its grandiose steel structure has linked the Pueblo Nuevo neighbourhood, to the south, with the Plaza de la Vigía since 1897.
After almost two centuries of failed attempts to build a bridge linking these two parts of the city, this heavy bridge is finally worth seeing and manages to survive unscathed by the harsh Caribbean climate. Located in the historical centre of the "Athens of Cuba", it is an icon worth visiting.
