The Museo Municipal de Playa Girón is located in the Península de Zapata, in Matanzas, more specifically within the tourist area of Playa Girón, so getting there will not require more than a walk from your beloved sea.
It dates back to 1959, the year in which Fidel Castro ended Batista's dictatorial regime. However, it was declared a Municipal Museum in 1976, only two years before it was recognized as a National Monument.
Here you can see part of the artifacts that remain from the April 1961 event when Fidel Castro and 1,500 Cuban exiles in the United States invaded the country and which the neighborhood still holds in its heart today. The 250,000 people who have come to the museum since its opening can experience the realism with which the material evidence is displayed.
Here is a preview of some of the items you will find, although the staff is constantly renewing itself and opening exhibitions, as well as carrying out activities aimed mainly at the local residents. You may be interested in the uniforms, badges and weapons of the militants, the maps showing what their plans were, or different writings with information about the attack. Photos and videos are also available.
