The Cueva de los Musulmanes (Cave of the Muslims) is one of the most remarkable galleries in the Reserva Ecológica de Varahicacos (Varahicacos Ecological Reserve) because human remains have been found inside. Located in this reserve to the north of the peninsula de Hicacos close to the famous city of Varadero, a major tourist destination in Cuba, it's close to other important caves as Cueva de Ambrosio (Ambrosio Cave) with a multitude of cave paintings in its walls.
It is believed that in this rocky cavity funeral rites were carried out. The remains of an almost complete skeleton of a man between 25 and 35 years old, who died of syphilis, as well as other fossils, have been found there. The remains are estimated to date back to 500 BC and 500 aC, revealing that the disease was not brought by the Spanish as had always been believed. Next to the skeleton were found several bones of Megalocnus rodens, a prehistoric animal that was the ancestor of the “jutía” and served as food for the natives of the area.
The cave is named after the area where it was found because, given the characteristics of the area, the surrounding area served as a hiding place for Cuban smugglers, who called themselves the Muslims.
The place is worth visiting not only because of the archaeological importance of the site but also because of the biodiversity of the environment. The fauna and flora that inhabit the Reserva Ecológica Varahicacos surprises everyone who visits it
