The Parque de la Libertad (Liberty Park), formerly known as the Plaza de Armas (Arma Square), is the second most important meeting point in Matanzas after the Plaza de la Vigía. It is a place where Cubans have always gathered to chat, walk, go on dates... and above all to enjoy the panoramic view provided by the surroundings of this square.
In the centre of this iconic spot, you will find two sculptures of great artistic, historical and above all symbolic importance. First of all, there is the Estatua de la Libertad (Liberty Statue), giving its name to the park, and it portrays a woman holding a broken chain in her two hands, while her face shows a fierce cry of freedom. Right behind this, on a pillar, stands a statue of José Martí, known as the Liberator of Cuba, presiding over the entire square.
Around this impressive altar in the middle of the square, the landscape is decorated with palm trees and other trees under which we always find matanceros walking or chatting on their benches.
All around this beautiful scene are several of the most important and majestic buildings in the city, such as the Hotel Velasco, the Biblioteca Gener y del Monte (formerly the Spanish Casino) or the Museo Farmacéutico (Pharmaceutical Museum).
It is not surprising that this prime location is a favourite spot for locals since the construction of the city.
