The Ermita de Monserrate (Shrine of Monserrate), to the north of the city of Matanzas, is the perfect place to enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the city and the Yumurí valley. The shrine, characteristic of the city's neoclassical style, was built in 1875 by Catalan settlers. It represents one of the most iconic structures of Cuba's colonial architecture.
It is said that the sponsors of the church's construction decided to build it in this exceptional area of the city, on the heights of Simpson, because of its resemblance to the mountain of Montserrat in their native Catalonia. The inauguration marked the beginning of one of the most famous celebrations in the history of the city, pilgrimages in honour of the patron saint of Catalans, who at the time represented a significant percentage of the Spanish population in Matanzas.
A visit to the Ermita de Monserrate is a must for those who enjoy and appreciate the panoramic views. From its viewpoint, you can marvel at the wild nature of the Yumurí valley, the entire city of Matanzas and the San Juan River to the south.
Next to this shrine you can appreciate the passing of time and imagine how this place has been growing and changing since its foundation to become what it is today.
