The Parque de Bomberos (Fire Station) of Matanzas is one of the most beautiful buildings in this Cuban city. It opened in 1900 in the old Parque Cervantes and, although it still functions as it was originally intended, it also houses a small museum that shows the history of this institution to the public.
The building is located near the historical center, near the Plaza de la Vigia, and is part of the group of symbolic buildings of the city, dominated by the neoclassical style. Its architecture is among the most beautiful of this movement, even the Director of the Louvre Museum in Paris in 1996 stated that this was "the most beautiful fire station in the world".
The firemen's museum, the first one dedicated to this department in the country. It includes 3,000 pieces arranged in three rooms, among which are objects and documents of great significance for the history of this institution. Among them, the “Matanzas” steam pump brought from New York in 1864, the first in the region, and other later pumps such as the so-called “Cuba” and “La Caridad”. They are of great historical importance for they were used to put out fires during the Independence Wars when these devices were state-of-the-art technology of the time.
In addition to the priceless value of the building, the institution and the exhibits, the parque de Bomberos keeps some mysteries for itself. In 1997, while restoration work was underway, a series of secret underground galleries were found connecting some of the city's key buildings, such as the Casa de Aduanas (Customs House), now the Palacio de Justicia (Courthouse).
