The Península de Zapata has some of the most diverse species of fauna and flora in Cuba. Its great size covers a large part of the province of Matanzas. A great part of this place is a swampy and muddy area, which due to the small population that inhabits its lands has been preserved in a state unmatched in the entire Caribbean.
The marshy geography gives many species their ideal habitat, such as the american crocodile and insects like the zancudo. This small animal has been responsible for keeping the area uninhabited and practically virgin, as it transmits malaria.
Attempts were made to transform this area into a farming area after the Cuban Revolution, however, this project was forged and it quickly became a nature reserve.

As we have already mentioned one of the best plans you can make in the Península de Zapata is to admire its incredible fauna and flora. It is an ideal place for bird watching, and if you are a diving lover you can discover its fish and corals in the salt water caves that exist.
In addition, you will be able to discover numerous legends and myths of the many battles that took place here between Tainos and settlers. Not only that, but you can also discover how the American army attacked and lost to Cuba in 1961.
If you go by car you will have to go in the direction of Playa Larga and Bahía de Cochinos, but we recommend that for your visit to the Península de Zapata you should go on an organized tour, either from Havana or from Varadero, since the road is somewhat difficult.
The best accommodation options are in the nearby Playa Larga and Playa Girón, or in the city of Jagüey Grande. The Península de Zapata is a natural reserve, so accommodation options are limited.
