The Río Canímar (Canimar River) is the largest and most voluminous river that flows into the Matanzas Bay, in Cuba. Located 8 km east of the city, it offers the tourist a pleasant journey through its 12 km of navigable waters, amidst an amazing landscape.
This important archaeological zone, where Cuban natives settled long before our era, is special not only for the remains of ancient civilizations that have been discovered here but for the great natural wealth of its landscape.
At the Parque Turístico de Río Canímar (Canímar River Tourist Park) you can rent boats or book an excursion to navigate the river's shallow waters and be amazed by the extraordinary views.
If you are a nature lover or just want to spend a day away from the hustle and bustle of the city, a quiet walk on this river is a terrific alternative. The lush tangle of trees and giant palms make it impossible to tell where civilization begins.
On the riverbanks you can see how the exotic and wild flora covers every last inch of the land or rock, demonstrating the fertility of these lands. In addition, it is a beautiful home for the hundreds of species found here, all of which you can admire. There are a great number of different birds, many of which are in danger of extinction.
