The Plaza de la Vigía is the heart of the city of Matanzas, not only because it is the old Plaza de Armas (Arma Square) where the city was founded in 17th century Cuba, but also because it is the centre from which the main streets of the metropolis start.
Its name refers to the fort that used to stand in the square and whose function was to protect the city from the continuous attacks of pirates and smugglers that circulated in the area.
Today, the fort is not preserved but, in exchange, the square shares space with some of the most significant buildings in the city, such as the Teatro Sauto (Theater), the Parque de Bomberos (Fire Station) or the Museo Histórico Provincial (Provincial Historical Museum) located in the Palacio de Junco. This makes it not only a strategic location but also one of the most iconic and beautiful places to visit in the whole city, where you can see some of the main artistic and historical monuments of the area.
