The Gran Parque Natural Montemar (Great Montemar Natural Park), within Ciénaga de Zapata in the south of the province of Matanzas in Cuba, is a unique ecosystem with an indescribable natural wealth.
The Parque Montemar is the largest wetland in the entire Caribbean. It is divided into two swamps separated by a rocky surface in the center, where a large number of plant and animal species live, some of them in danger of extinction or unique to this place.
Among the more than 900 species of flora in at least 14 different types of ecosystems such as mangroves, cactus, jungle, savannah, forest... there is a variety of animals, 190 varieties of birds, 31 species of reptiles and 12 species of mammals among which are manatees, flamingos, crocodiles, the peculiar and primitive manjuarí (needlefish) or the zunzuncito, the smallest hummingbird in the world with 3 millimeters, all of which are found here.
One of the most visited places in the park is the Laguna de las Salinas, a space where it is possible to see a multitude of migratory birds from the United States and other endemic ones. Bird watching is one of the most common activities in the area since a very common sight is the flamingos in the lagoon, a truly beautiful sight. Another activity is sport fishing thanks to the abundance of fish of different species.
The truth is that a trip through these lands is an unparalleled experience in which true nature lovers will be amazed at the biodiversity and beauty of such landscapes.
