San Miguel de los Baños is a town in the municipality of Jovellanos in the province of Matanzas, Cuba. Surrounded by mountains, in a very pleasant, fresh and dry microclimate. It is famous for the quality of the water from the springs that spring from an open fault between the volcanic rocks.
In the past it was a very popular spot among the Cuban upper class, who said it's beauty competed with the majestic city of Havana. Since the 20th century, wealthy families came to this area, located in the center of Matanzas province, to enjoy the charming landscape and to stay in the luxurious spa hotels that formed the town. However, after the Revolution in 1959, a sugar mill polluted the waters and caused the hotel complex to be closed, leading to its abandonment and deterioration.
The Gran Hotel Balneario San Miguel de los Baños, the most famous of all, is a large three-storey Renaissance-style palace that cannot be admired without feeling regret for its current state. Even so, many people still come to the area to be amazed at the still wonderful architecture and to imagine what this place must have been like in its time of splendour, as well as to try the medicinal properties of the waters that still run through the back of the hotel.
Another place visited by tourists in San Miguel de los Baños is the Loma de Jacán, the second highest point in the province, to enjoy pleasant views of the valley and its surroundings.
