The Catedral de Cárdenas (Cardenas Cathedral), also known as the Iglesia Parroquial de la Purísima Concepción de Cárdenas (Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception of Cardenas), in Cuba, is the most important temple in the city and probably the most traditional one. The official opening is in 1846 thanks to the selfless work and donations of many neighbours who, in spite of the few funds they possessed, built a church of incalculable value.
Its unmistakable facade stands out among the buildings in the town, creating one of the most beautiful postcard-like images that we can find walking around Cárdenas. Its structure is very special; it consists of a facade and two towers, one on each side, built of carved stone, while the rest of the construction is made of masonry and carved stone. The style of the temple is Greco-Roman and quite restrained, although some Doric-style ornaments stand out. What is most striking are the two towers, one of which has four bells, the largest dating from 1765, and the other is adorned by the clock bell.
In addition to the beauty provided by its imposing structure, the church gains greater splendor where it is located, in the Parque Colón, where there is a statue of the discoverer of America considered the first to be erected in the western hemisphere.
