The Birthplace of José María de Heredia in Santiago de Cuba is the old home of what is considered the first Cuban poet and today it is a museum in honor of this most important figure of letters in this country.
The building is a sample of colonial architecture from the 19th century when the poet's parents arrived in the city. That same year, 1803, the writer known for conspiring against the Spanish power on the island was born, for which he had to suffer exile from his beloved nation. At only 35 years of age, he would die with great sadness far from his homeland, but not before having become an essential personality in Cuban culture.
Today his house, a National Monument since 1889, exhibits documents, paintings and other pieces of great value. Many of them were donated by descendants of the artist. Apart from promoting different cultural activities, the main function of this center is to promote the life and work of the poet who is undoubtedly worth knowing.
