The Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Church, far from being a religious temple, is a space where part of the cultural life of the Cuban city of Santiago de Cuba takes place, a concert hall dedicated to classical music.
The need for a place with specific qualities for symphonic music concerts led to the conversion of the ruins of the church of our lady of sorrows into the Dolores Concert Hall in 1986. The archbishop of the city donated the site for its conversion and in this way it was possible to recover the excellent acoustic conditions that the temple had in the past.
In 1989 the new hall was inaugurated with a concert in which the works of Ludwig van Beethoven played by the wonderful Orquesta Sinfónica de Oriente and Maestro Frank Fernández predominated. The creation of this space is of vital importance for the city due to the essential role that music plays in the country and especially in Santiago de Cuba, that is why it is a place where locals and visitors regularly go to enjoy the magnificent performances that take place in the old church.
